The Haywood County Medical Society, a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization, was originally organized in 1959 for the association and mutual benefit of the physicians of Haywood County, North Carolina. The purpose of the society is to serve as a forum for continuing medical education, promote collegiality among providers and to improve the standards of medical care for our community.
In 2017, the members voted to open membership to the surrounding far Western North Carolina counties and to include Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners. The new name of Smoky Mountain Medical Society (SMMS) was chosen to reflect the expanded area where members work and live.
